Explorers:

What We Are:

The Spencerport Fire Department Explorer Post # 533 is sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America, Seneca Waterways Council, and the Spencerport Volunteer Firemen's Association.  Membership is open to young adults, male and female, ages 14 - 21, who are interested in the field of firefighting as a possible career option.  We provide an avenue in which our youth members will be given the information needed to pursue a career in emergency services.

What We Do:

Our Explorers are issued uniforms and firefighting gear.  They train with actual firefighting equipment in a controlled environment that ensures the safety of all our members.  The Post Advisors also deliver a curriculum in a classroom setting that is consisitent with what real firefighters learn as they complete their training.  The Explorers are used at real fire scenes and similar emergencies to help change firefighters air tanks and other non-hazardous duties.  The Explorers attend meetings, and train with neighboring fire depaprtments as part of an ongoing team building exercise.  Our Explorers also have a firematic tournament team called "The Green Onions" in which they compete aginst other area Explorer posts during the summer months.  The Explorers also march in area firemen's parades and perform several fund raising events throughout the year.  Explorers will develop a sense of pride and commitment in volunteering for their community as they work together to learn fundamentals of firefighting.

How To Join:

If this sounds interesting to you then why not give it a try?  The Explorer Post is a very valuable and structured program that is provided to our youth at a very small cost to parents.  So if you live in the Spencerport Fire District ( Town of Ogden, Village of Spencerport, or north end of the Town of Parma) or attend Spencerport Schools and would be interested in joining the Explorer Post, then stop by Fire Station 1, 175 Lyell Ave in the Village of Spencerport for the Wednesday night meeting/drill at 7pm.  You may visit www.rochesterexploring.org to download a youth particpant application.  You can also call Safety Officer Chris Damon, Head Advisor, for additional information at 352-6115 or email cdamon@spencerportfire.org.
